Movin' Forward (2007-2024)

2007, at School of Visual Arts, where I was studying Photography, what started as a one-year thesis project evolved into a life long passion. The project extended far beyond the class and continued post-graduation, growing into a visual documentation of hip-hop culture in my birthplace Korea. And, where I happened to be back then, the birthplace of hip hop, New York City.

Movin' Forward focuses on the breaking element of hip-hop, capturing the raw energy, dedication, and artistry of dancers who keep the culture alive. From its birthplace in New York City to its explosive growth in other parts of the world, breaking has transcended borders, uniting communities and influencing new generations of dancers across the globe. Through my photographs, I wanted to preserve its authenticity while showcasing its fluidity and its soul.
I have faced challenges—navigating cultural differences, gaining access to certain events, and overcoming financial hurdles—but my dedication to storytelling and cultural preservation had kept me going. Over the years, I've been blessed to have met such wonderful talented human beings in this network of "hip hop". Friendships with artists, event organizers, and communities, I have built a body of work that I hope reflects the heart of the breaking scene.

Take a glimpse into the passion and resilience of the hip-hop community. Whether you are a fellow artist, a potential client, or someone inspired by cultural storytelling, I welcome you to be part of this journey together.

More coming soon. Stay tuned.
